In August, the kind support from the Chua Foundation transformed the landscape of empowerment for individuals within the Ageing Well beneficiaries at Upper Thomson and Bedok through a thoughtful donation of exercise equipment and furniture. The significance of this contribution resonates deeply, especially for those with disabilities seeking avenues to improve their physical and mental well-being.

The exercise equipment received by the Bedok beneficiaries—pulley systems, pedal exercisers, exercise bikes, and a treadmill—has proven to be transformative. According to Ms. Vanitha Muthiah, Senior Physiotherapist, “Gym equipment training is an efficient way to help people with disabilities exercise. It is easy to follow and does not require understanding verbal instructions or remembering sequences.”

Ms. Muthiah further emphasizes, “This can be beneficial for people with cognitive disabilities and multiple disabilities. Gym equipment training can also help to improve mental health, reduce anxiety and depression, improve sleep, and help maintain a healthy weight. It can also aid in enhancing bone health and circulation.”

Crucially, all gym equipment training sessions are supervised by Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) and training officers to ensure safety. The beneficiaries engage with enthusiasm, feeling included and valued within these sessions, fostering a sense of belonging and social inclusion.

Furthermore, the furniture provided has been instrumental in bolstering independence and confidence among the beneficiaries. A training officer from Upper Thomson attested to the impact, stating, “The anti-slip mats have proven not only to ensure that our beneficiaries are safe but also to ensure that they are able to continue practicing independence, especially in daily tasks like dishwashing.”

The addition of the geriatric chair and table has enabled individuals recovering from injuries due to falls to comfortably participate in center programs, restoring their sense of normalcy and routine.

Moreover, the inclusion of cushioned chairs with waterproof features has not only enhanced comfort but also facilitated ease in maintaining existing home-living skills among the beneficiaries. This has inadvertently reduced accidents, allowing for more focused and uninterrupted program engagement.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Chua Foundation for their unwavering support and generous sponsorship, enabling us to further our mission of supporting persons with disabilities in their journey towards a healthier and more inclusive life.
